13 questions you should ask yourself to find fulfilment in your work life

“There is no decision that we can make that doesn’t come with some sort of balance or sacrifice.” – Simon Sinek

In a fast paced world maintaining balance is becoming increasingly difficult.

With technology evolving at such a rapid pace its becoming even more difficult to find the work/life balance people so desperately want. When it comes to striking this balance in my experience it starts by enjoying your work.

Below are some questions to ask yourself to ensure you are fulfilled in your current workplace.

Rate yourself out of 10. 1 being low and 10 being high.

  1. How important are career achievements to you?
  2. How satisfying are your career achievements to date?
  3. How fulfilled are you in your current work environment?
  4. How much do you look forward to going to work each day?
  5. Does your career stimulate and develop you as a person?
  6. Do you have a healthy & rewarding work/ life balance?
  7. Is your career moving you forward in advancement and reward?
  8. How important are strong working relationships to you?
  9. How satisfied are you with your current working relationships?
  10. Is your working environment positive and supportive?
  11. Do you find contentment and fulfilment in your current career?
  12. How urgently would you like a career change?
  13. If you died today, are you happy with the legacy you’ll leave behind?

Score above 104 = Congratulations you are on the right track. Ask yourself these questions every 6months to ensure your still in a good place. If you had any lower scores identify what could be done to make this a 10/10!

Score between 65-103 = You get some satisfaction day to day but there could be areas that don’t excite or fulfil you. Now you know the areas in your career that need attention is there anything that is within your control that could improve your score? Could it be building better relationships with colleagues or coming up with a new incentive or reward scheme?

Score below 64= Maybe it’s time for a change! On a positive note you may have identified what areas are important to you which will benefit you upon looking for new opportunities. For example if a work/life balance is crucial as you don’t have enough social time then, perhaps look for a job that offers more flexible working hours or days from home.

The last question can be confronting but also one of the most crucial. Nothing saddens me more than hearing someone say “oh this job is just a stepping stone” when I probe and ask them what they are working towards they rarely tell me a straight answer. The stepping stone soon becomes the dead-end job for the next 20 years.

Life is short and time is precious do you really want to be getting out of bed every day to do a job that gives you no fulfilment?

‘Without a clear focus on our guiding values and priorities, each of us runs a real risk of successfully climbing a very long ladder only to find it leaning against the wrong wall.’’ –Stephen Covey

So what do you do if you scored below 103 or below from the above questions?

First off don’t panic you’re unfortunately like the majority of people!

The first step is taking the time to ask yourself the following questions.

  1. What do I want?
  2. Followed by for what purpose?
  3. Followed by this will mean?

I urge you to dive deep into these questions and take some responsibility for your future.

The first step for achieving any goal is to know where you want to go. Now you have a clear vision for your future it’s time to set yourself some short and long term goals to ensure you have a strategy to get you there.

How do you set motivating and achievable goals?

Stay tuned.
