What are the top 5 traits you should look for in a great recruiter?

Finding the right recruitment partner can make or break a successful hiring strategy.

So here are our top 5 traits of what to look for in a great recruiter:

1.     Likeability

This may sound straight forward, but chances are, whether you’re a client or a candidate you will be working closely with your chosen recruiter so it’s important that you get along and even share some of the same values. If they make you laugh occasionally even better! The ability to build relationships is at the core of a successful recruiter.

2.     Emotional Intelligence

Refers to the ability to identify and manage one’s own emotions, as well as the emotions of others. Self- awareness is crucial as a recruiter as we deal with people all day every day. If your recruiter lacks the ability to manage their state, you are in for a bumpy ride. I have seen many recruiters become easily irritated and frustrated if something has not gone according to plan. How a recruiter bounces back from challenging times is what sets them apart from the competition.

3.     Authenticity

Authenticity is when someone believes in what they say or acts in a way that is consistent with their beliefs and values. You can often tell quickly whether to trust what someone is saying. If they speak with passion and authority this is a good sign. When you meet them see if they can keep eye contact and are listening to what you are saying. Honesty goes a long way in today’s market.

4.    Tenacity and Drive

To be a successful recruiter you need to be driven and persistent. It’s important to know the recruiter you partner with will do everything they can to help you secure your next job or find the best talent for your business. In a competitive market you want to know your job or career are in good hands

5.     Empathy

You can’t be a great recruiter and not care about people. The downside of recruitment is that you sometimes have to let people know they were unsuccessful or that candidate you liked has chosen to accept another job offer. Having empathy will allow you to sympathise with people and shows you care.

Finding a great recruiter can be hard, but once you have found a good partnership it can be hugely beneficial for your career or company. Recruitment is not easy, so you want to ensure the recruiter you choose to work with has all five qualities above.
